Golden Wheat Chapter AHSGR Bierock Fundraiser

Today my dil and I picked up her daughter from preschool and went to Wichita to help other members of the Golden Wheat Chapter of the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia make bierocks to raise funds for the chapter. Other members had been there since early this morning so baking was well on the way by the time we arrived. All bierocks were pre-sold, so it was just a matter of getting them made, all 320+.

I didn't get pictures of the preparation because I had immediately gotten busy helping and forgot to take pictures.
So I got pictures of bierocks cooling and dishes being cleaned.
All that was left was to get them packaged up and off to whoever was going to deliver them to the purchasers. This is the second year that we've done the bierock sale and this year was a little more fine tuned with a wonderful volunteer turnout to help. Next year we hope to do even better, taking notes from what we could improve on from this year. So we're all geared up for the next time, we may even try a second one this year, who knows.

First I want to thank you for adding information to my blog - I appreciate it.

For superbowl Sunday, I made 100 bierocks. I was sure glad my son didn't want more than that. I cheated by buying the frozen rolls, but I rolled each of them out to fill and fold.

Later my son, told me someone with cooking skills told him - you can insert the meat filling into the bread dough by using a cake decorator with a large tip. Well, that's now exactly what he told me - but it's what I heard.

I think I'll try that next time. You are probably well ahead of me in tips on bierock baking, but thought I'd toss out the tip in case it was of interest to you.

I'd love to have a good recipe for the meat filling, if you'd care to share. I make it different each time (which isn't very often!) - but it almost always has ground beef, onions, sauerkraut, and shredded cabbage - and whatever spices I decide on.

I'm of the notion that bierocks came to us from Germany, is that what you think?

Wendy - I've used the frozen dough myself when making bierocks. I don't know how inserting the meat & cabbage mix would work. Would you do this after it raises? All the recipes I have call for hamburger, cabbage, onion and salt and pepper. That's it. Some people spice it up with other ingredients and even add cheese.

I'll see what I can do about more info on bierocks. Watch for a post.

Anita & RC - To bad I couldn't attached the smell, I'd have you ALL drooling.

Hi! Love the article. Mind you those biewrocks look like very large scones, which I also love.

As I'm an old mug, I was drawn to the many other mugs on the wall.

You obviously have a great many members and a great many memories to share.

And a great many more memories to come! I look forward to them all!

Take Care,
Peter

Hi, Peter! Do you ever make stuffed scones? The bierocks have hamburger, onions and cabbage in the middle of them.

The mugs belong to the church. We just "rent" the kitchen and auditorium for meetings. I was looking at them myself that day, they have several very interesting ones. : )

Memories are what we're all about as that we are a Historical Society.

Hi! Sometimes sultanas are added to the mix. Mostly we just cut the scones in half and put heaps of strawberry jam and cream in the middle.

Off-topic a bit. I've been working overtime on your tag in between my night shifts. Yes, I've broken some rules but I hope you like it. You might get a surprise when you see it.

I'll try to get it out on the 1 March, 2008. Our time that is!

Regards,
Peter

Peter - I had to go look up what sultanas were. Raisins! Yea, we put raisins in lots of breads, and other things too.

Our California Raisins reached cult status in the late 80's...

I'll be keeping an eye on your blog to see how you pimped the meme this time. They say creativity keeps your mind sharp.

Those look so delicious. I didn't realize that they are filled until I read your last comment. I can see that this would be a wonderful community event each year.
