Play Ball!

Another grandson, my son's son, is playing ball this year. This is his first time playing ball and he's excited to be playing. He bypassed T-ball and is playing machine pitch. The first thing that needs to be done is to get the machine set up.
That's him, number 23, sitting out the first inning when his team was in the field.
He wasn't up to bat in the first 3 up, 3 down at bat.
Coach put him center field and he got quite a bit of action in this position...
...do you see the ball he tossed back? Look to the top left hand corner of the score board.
A briefing from the coach, probably tips on getting the ball back faster since he was getting so many hit to him.
You can tell he had his heart in it, he actually ran...
Finally, up to bat. Pitch... swing... STRIKE. Pitch... Swing... STRIKE. Pitch... Swing... chink! Surprised me enough that I forgot to take a picture....
...and almost forgot to get a picture of him running for first.
He made it to first! WAY TO GO!!!
But that's all the further he was able to get. Back to the dugout and back outfield.
The scoreboard tells it all, they didn't win...
...but they had a good time and they're still learning the game.
A big part of it being good sportsmanship. So give the opponents 'five' and thank them for a good game.

Hi! There's one thing I would have liked to have done when I was a kid at school. You guessed it, baseball. My brother got into fairly late in his life, as a coach of a T-ball team and they did pretty well by all accounts. The only sports we had way back then was rugby league, cricket, tennis, golf and swimming. Love the images and thank you for sharing this.

Take Care,
Peter

Great pictures! Looks like a really fun evening...

I wish Isaiah could play... his learning disabilities put him behind his own age group in coordination and abilities, and I don't think they'd let him play in the younger teams... I don't know if I could get him to play or not...

Congratulations to your grandson on his first hit in a real baseball game! It makes me smile to think how exciting that must have been for him.

Peter - and when I was in school we didn't have soccer, or rather, we didn't play competition soccer, because the girls did play in gym class. Now EVERYBODY has soccer teams and baseball is being played competively around the world.

Anita - When my daughter's oldest played ball there was a boy with Down's syndrome that they went out of the way to accomodate. This was the younger teams and not so competitive. Everything wasn't WIN AT ALL COSTS. Has Isaiha ever expressed an interest?

Alice - The hit was certainly a surprise! He only got up to bat the one time because most of his team members were striking out which means only 3 members bat get to bat then back out on the field. Hopefully they'll get the hang of it by the end of the season.

He's never seen a baseball game... doesn't even know they play it here, I don't think... he loves being with other kids, and playing, and I think he'd like it...

Anita - talk to the coaches. Find out how welcoming they would be to Isaiah. Playing ball should be a fun yet challenging experience for the child. If all they want to do is WIN, then keep him far away. But if they'd like to teach him the game and welcome him into what it is to be a member of a team, then GO FOR IT.
