Update on Chase Kear

I posted about Chase Kear's pole vaulting accident on October 7 so I wanted to let you all know that your prayers have done wonders. I apologize for not updating you sooner.

Chase has made a miraculous recovery and gains ground daily. A week after the accident his brain pressure was down to normal and he was showing responsive movement, but still sedated to keep pain at a minimum. Tuesday the 14th reported, "Chase reached across the bed toward one nurse, he squeezed another ones hand on command, and he tracked the third one with his eyes across the room. He moved his lips when I told him he could kiss me." By Saturday the 18th he was waving, moving his legs around and giving out kisses. Sunday night, Oct 19, he was moved out of ICU. By the next day rehab had him sitting on the edge of the bed. Tuesday afternoon he was moved to Wesley Rehab, he also took three tiny steps and helped to put his pants on. By Thursday, three weeks from the time of the accident, he was able to take 45-50 steps with the help of a walker. On October 24th there was a benefit dance held, here's what was written about it and also the fund that has been set up for Chase...

"There will be a Benefit Dance at The Keg in Colwich on October 24th at 8pm. There will be a dj, karaoke, and lots of fun with family and friends. Donations (give all you can!) will be accepted to help with medical and other expenses. The Keg is located at 167th St. W. and 53rd St. N. Please join us to help celebrate Chase's amazing progress. Have a Beer for Kear!"

"The mayor of Colwich has set up a fund to assist Chase's family with medical expenses. Donations will be accepted at Colwich City Hall, which is located at 310 S. 2nd Street in Colwich. Checks can be made payable to either the City of Colwich or to Paul and Paula Kear. For more information please call Colwich City Hall at 316-796-1025."

Also by the 25th he was showing signs of mental recovery, reading commands from cards showing more complex thought processes, such as following multiple commands (touch your nose, shut your eyes, and point to the door) and show facial expressions. On the 26th he took his phone and texted a friend. Tuesday the 28th the trach tube came out and he spoke a few words. He continues to improve in every way. He had his vision tested on the 29th and the doctor was surprised because he has NO vision damage. As of today, he's on soft foods and looking forward to actually getting a tray of food on Monday. He's walking with his head up and making improvements all the way around. The family thanks everyone for their prayers and believes that Chase wouldn't be doing as well had it not been for God's hand.

Hi! Who said prayers were a waste of time, not me! Great news!

Now, what about your new President? Another Kennedy in the making I think!

Take Care,
Peter

Anita, Thank You! for all your prayers!

Peter - A lot in the medical community encourage prayer in helping with healing. I hope our new Pres-to-be fares better than the Kennedys, two of them were shot dead.

Momo! I'm so glad that we could be a vessel of hope for you and your sweet little boy. May God Bless You and Yours Abundantly!

We are so happy to hear that Chase has recovered so well. We don't know Chase or his family, but our son was injured in the same type of accident in May of 2007. He was vaulting for Idaho State at a meet at Weber State in Ogden, Utah when it happened. He was in the hospital for 30 days, 18 days of that in ICU. He had to have a portion of his skull removed because of the brain swelling, but after it was replaced he recovered at a miraculous rate. I'm happy to say that he came home, finished his senior year of college and graduated from the University of Oregon last June. Even though he appears completely normal to people, there are still lingering effects of the accident having to do with his critical thinking skills and he is working very hard to surmount those. Our thoughts and well wishes go to Chase and his family.

Alice, thank you for commenting. I'm glad to hear that your son is doing well also. I have a more current update that I failed to get posted, it's about a month old now, but I will try to get it posted today anyway.
