2007 Snow & Ice

The first two pictures below were taken on Monday. As you can see, the ice is not as bad as it was in 2005, the limbs are weighed down a bit, but not all the way to the ground as they were then. Hutchinson has gotten the ice that we had in 2005, their damage looks very familiar.
So far, we have not lost power. Think good thoughts! Tomorrow it's not suppose to be too bad and they're forecasting snow for the weekend. Snow will be a nice change from all this ice.
Today I was finally able to get a good shot of the bird's nest that I had mentioned in a comment. Here's some good that came from the 2005 ice storm. This bird's nest is built on the blunt top of a branch that was broken off in the 2005 storm. I think this might have gotten sawed off flat, making it all that much better. Then little branches grew up around the edges of the "platform" making the perfect place for a nest. You can see nests like these all over town.
The flowers were still in bloom when the ice hit. They hadn't yet given up and now they're flowersicles.
Same with the rose bush... a bushsicle?
All the time I was out looking for things to photograph I could hear, "honk, honk, honk..." The geese have finally decided to fly south (you may need to click on the picture and enlarge it to see them). I saw this and another gaggle in the minute I was out back and had heard at least one if not two others while I was around front.

I love the sound of the geese, but it's such a lonely sound to me... Like a train in the distance in the middle of the night...

Peter - Thanks for checking up on me! Poor plants have had a hard time knowing what season it is. We're all doing good, most all the ice melted yesterday and now we're suppose to get snow.

KSHC - Yep! Hubby doesn't think it'll be near as bad as they're predicting. Time will tell.

Anita - I just wish I had a camera that would pick up on the ligth refraction like my eyes do. Some of the ice in the sun yesterday looked like crystals, shooting rainbows.

It's funny, where we're at, we seem to be in a flight path. I think it's may be because we're not far from the river. We hear the geese every year, I guess the Whooping crane has been spotted on the river just a few miles north, they've also seen eagles there and the Monarch butterfly comes through here every year also. We used to be on the flight path of bigger birds, too. McConnell AirForce base had a flight plan for their jets that flew over us all time when they were getting their time in the air. We haven't seen them since they're all overseas now. They'd fly over with their stealth plains, low and fast, you wouldn't hear them till they were right on top of you. Quite a sight to see.

Brrrr, this looks cold and I bet the wind is howling too! I will keep an eye out for your geese. They seem to end up here in the winter! Keep warm, great pics.

dan - thanks for the visit. Fortunatly we haven't had a lot of wind during this winter storm. Wind would have made it a whole lot worse. It's been snowing since Friday evening, I'll have to get pictures tomorrow.

Loving the icy pictures, but hope that it doesn't bring you any problems. That's the trouble with winter. It's so beautiful, but only until you have to drive in it or it takes out your power.

Good luck!

Kathy - I like looking at the snow and ice too, as long as I don't have to get out in it. And I'm really fine with getting out in it as long as my feet don't get wet and I can bundle enough to stay warm and still be able to move. We do all right without power. We close up the kitchen and turn on the gas oven. I also get my big kerosene lamps for additional heat and light. It's amazing how much heat those lamps put off.
