A few weeks ago we had a visit from a longtime family friend that lives in Oklahoma. As usual we all met up in Wichita for dinner.
As we prepared to leave I told family to meet me outside, I have vegetables for anyone that wanted them, mainly cucumbers. A man at the next table overheard my offer and "jokingly" said that he'd take some, too. Our waiter also said that he'd like some (see picture below) and my husband told him to come on out and get some.
Outside my husband gave the waiter some cucumbers and told him to take a couple back to the gentleman at the table next to ours that said he wanted some also. I followed the waiter back in to ask for a couple of "go bags" and since he'd gotten some of the produce I didn't feel I was out of line for asking. Inside he asked me if he had seen okra also. I said, yes, but my
sil had already laid claim to it. He said if I had anymore in town with me that he sure would like some. He hadn't been able to find any in the stores.
Fast forward to Sept. 20, my husband and I came into town to do some shopping. While in Dillon's in their produce department I decided to see if they had okra or not. There in the organic vegetable section in a neat plastic box was fresh, uncut okra.... at $7.99 per pound! The batch in the picture above I cut yesterday evening, 1lb. 13.8oz. Nearly $16 worth! Did you hear my jaw hit the floor?
Then I checked out the garden and found a nice green row of Arugula sprouting.
Also found a row of Okra popping through the soil.
Over the alley are power lines and I was surprised to find a bird sitting on the heavier multi cable line. I walked around below it and positioned myself to try to get a really good shot, and it never moved.
It just sat there like a bird would sit a nest. I find that rather odd. It makes me wonder if it was feeling well. I've found a couple dead birds in the yard already this year. Not really sure what kind of bird this is but I think it's a female.
